Mike Ott delivered the tying goal in the 89th minute as the Philippine men’s national football team salvaged a 1-1 draw with Yemen in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers in Al Wakrah, Qatar on Tuesday.
The Azkals, who labored on offense most of the night, looked ready to concede defeat at Saoud bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani Stadium.
Tawfik Ali gave the Philippines reason to worry when a corner kick that bounced off several Azkals players ended up ricocheting off Ali’s foot and into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie in the 63rd minute.
The equalizer by Ott was netted in similarly fortuitous fashion.
The Philippines took advantage of an overly aggressive Yemen backline, a sequence that began when Junior Muñoz’s pass found Phil Younghusband at the penalty arc.
Paul Mulders then collected Younghusband’s flick pass with the intention to give it back. When Younghusband tripped, Ott was there for the recovery, finishing off the play with a strike amid two oncoming defenders.
The result enabled the Philippines to keep its solo hold of first place in Group F with 8 points, as Yemen forced a tie at second place with early winner Tajikistan.
