MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University volleyball teams will not participate in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Collegiate Conference later this month, according to Coach Oliver Almadro.
Speaking to reporters following Cignal HD’s loss to Philippine Air Force in the Finals of the PVL Reinforced Conference, Almadro said that there is not enough time for their volleyball teams to prepare for the upcoming tournament.
The Collegiate Conference starts on July 21.
“Ang alam ko talaga, Ateneo won't join the Collegiate Conference. It's because ang pasukan namin is mid-August, so most of our players just came in from vacation,” said Almadro.
He revealed that most of the Ateneo veterans just arrived from their vacations this week. “It’s too late for us for preparation,” the coach said.
“We explained to them na it’s too early for me, as a transition coach, ‘yung Collegiate Conference,” he added.
However, both the Lady Eagles and the Blue Eagles are hoping that they can join the Open Conference later this year.
“We are really willing to join the Open Conference, no matter what na kalaban namin is mabigat na teams, we are really willing to join the Open Conference, both men's and women's,” he said.
The Blue Eagles have dominated the men’s division of the Collegiate Conference, winning all three editions of the tournament. The Lady Eagles, meanwhile, struggled in last year’s competition and wound up missing the semifinals.
Almadro will be calling the shots for the Lady Eagles starting this year, after a five-year stint as the Blue Eagles’ head coach. Meanwhile, Timmy Sto. Tomas, Almadro’s longtime deputy, is the new coach of the men’s team.
