MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national under-18 team opened their campaign in the 2016 SEABA Under-18 championship by crushing Thailand, 101-45, Sunday at the Angkasapura Lanud Hall in Indonesia.
Five players scored in double-digits for Batang Gilas, led by team captain and Ateneo de Manila University commit Jolo Mendoza who had 16 points.
Joshua Sinclair added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, and Batang Gilas clobbered the Thais on the boards, 52-31, while registering 20 assists to their opponents’ 5.
They also took advantage of Thailand’s 24 turnovers to score 27 points in transition. As a team, Batang Gilas shot 48% from the field, while holding the Thais to only 14-of-52 shooting.
No Thai player reached double-digits in scoring.
The Philippines will next face Laos.
The top three teams at the end of the tournament will earn spots to the 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship in Iran in July.
