MANILA, Philippines — Veteran mentors Norman Black and Yeng Guiao make their All-Star comeback, while Nash Racela is set for his coaching debut in the PBA’s midseason classic this year.
The three coaches have been tapped to call the shots for the Gilas Pilipinas All-Star national team that will play against three different All-Star squads in the extravaganza from May 23 to 27.
The three take over coaching duties from Chot Reyes. The league made the official announcement on Wednesday.
Meralco’s Black will get the All-Star Week started when he faces off against longtime rival Tim Cone and the Mindanao All-Stars on May 23 in Digos, Davao del Sur.
NLEX’s Guiao gets his turn on May 25 in Batangas City, where he will match wits against San Miguel mentor Leo Austria and the Luzon All-Star team.
TNT’s Racela then makes his All-Star coaching debut on May 27, against Magnolia’s Chito Victolero and the Visayas All-Stars.
This serves as a homecoming of sorts for Black and Guiao.
Black last coached an All-Star game in 1997, while Guiao was at the helm of the North All-Star team that thrashed the South All-Star in a high-scoring game, 154-151, during the 2016 edition of the meet held at the Araneta Coliseum.
