US-based Filipino boxer Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta bared that he used to train with world lightweight champion Jorge Linares, who will be his next opponent come January 27.
Gesta said his experience taking on Linares will be useful once they meet inside the ring in Inglewood, Calif.
“I was a training partner of Linares and although he has improved I know him well. He is a fighter who knows how to move, knows how to box,” the Cebuano native said in a report posted on BoxingScene.com.
Gesta pointed out that the Venezuelan belt-holder has lost before and by that logic has weaknesses in his game.
“He has visited the canvas, we are working on a plan to be able to come out with the victory,” Gesta said.
Linares boasts a record of 43 wins and 3 losses with 27 KOs, while Gesta has a 31-1 card with 17 KOs and 2 draws.
Gesta said that, since he suffered a decision loss to Miguel Vazquez in 2012, he has been determined to improve. After that loss, he has strung together 6 straight victories, 3 of them coming by way of stoppages.
“After the defeat that I had in 2012, I became a better fighter and a person who accepts challenges in life, so I trained harder and smarter,” he said.
Gesta added that he wants nothing but to hold the world title.
“I want a victory. To be a champion is the dream of every fighter. I want to be recognized as one of the best fighters in the world and write my name in the history of boxing,” he said.
“I do not know what will happen in the fight, but I can promise that I will give the very best of me to be victorious.”
