Kobe Paras took over in crunch time to power University of the Philippines (UP) past the Chien Hsin University of Science and Technology, 97-93, in the finals of the 2019 Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Cup in Taiwan on Sunday afternoon.
Paras came up with big shots down the stretch to give the Fighting Maroons a late lead, with his three-pointer pushing them ahead, 90-83, with 2:08 to play.
The Maroons led by 11 points with 1:28 to go, 94-83, after Paras picked off a pass and rose for a slam dunk.
But their opponents showed no quit, scoring 8 straight points to make it a one-possession game, 94-91, with 38.1 ticks left.
The Maroons further left the door open when David Murrell bricked two charities, but a split at the line by Jaybie Montilla and a huge block by Bright Akhuetie kept them in control. More free throws by Paras in the end iced the game for the Fighting Maroons.
Paras finished with a team-high 37 points to lift the Fighting Maroons to the crown.
