PayMaya set to make PVL debut

MANILA, Philippines – PLDT has given way to PayMaya as its brand name when it sees action in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference in May.

Coach Roger Gorayeb said it was a “corporate decision” to change the team name, after it was initially announced that PLDT was set to make its return to the league after a two-year layoff.

Instead, Gorayeb’s squad will be playing under the banner of the MVP Group of Companies-owned app that is used in convenience stores, pawnshops, and malls to pay for purchases online as an alternative to a credit card.

“But we will bring in the same team announced last January, with a few changes,” said Gorayeb.

They will parade the same core of the Bali Pure squad that Gorayeb mentored last season. Leading the team will be Gretchel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa, formerly of San Sebastian, National University’s Jasmin Nabor, Aiko Urdas, and Jorelle Singh, Far Eastern University’s Jerrili Malabanan and Gel Cayuna, and legendary libero Tatan Pantone.

Gorayeb has also signed up San Sebastian’s Kath Villegas and Joyce Sta. Rita, and the FEU pair of Czarina Carandang and Celine Domingo to beef up his core.

The only player who wasn’t able to join Gorayeb from that Bali Pure squad was Risa Sato, who signed a one-year contract with the Creamline Cool Smashers where she will join Alyssa Valdez, Jia Morado, Melissa Gohing, and recently crowned Bb. Pilipinas Globe Michele Gumabao.

Although it is still in the process of acquiring a pair of imports, PayMaya as has emerged this early as one of the teams to watch out for like powerhouse Creamline, Pocari Sweat-Air Force, and Perlas-BanKo.

“We’re still looking for the right imports to fit our lineup,” said Gorayeb. “Hopefully, we could give them a good fight.”

Also joining this conference are the Petro Gazz Angels and Tacloban Fighting Warays.
