MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine used a huge third quarter to turn back NLEX, 96-89, in a PBA preseason game on Tuesday at the Upper Deck Gym in Pasig.
After trailing 40-51 at the half, the Elasto Painters outscored the Road Warriors, 38-19, in the pivotal third period to take a 78-70 lead entering the final frame.
They showed no let up in the fourth quarter, with Rain or Shine leading by as much as 16 points, 87-71, with 10 minutes to go off a Dom Trollano jumper.
“We started slow,” said Rain or Shine Coach Caloy Garcia. “We had no energy in the beginning.”
“But once we picked it up, we played a lot better,” he added.
Trollano les Rain or Shine with 20 points, while Maverick Ahanmisi added 16 markers.
Rain or Shine was playing sans Raymond Almazan, Jericho Cruz, and James Yap.
Rabeh Al-Husseini led NLEX with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Kiefer Ravena added 14 points and five assists.
In the first game of the double-header in Pasig, Phoenix edged Alaska, 89-85.
The Fuel Masters led by 11 points, 82-71, late in the fourth before a late flurry by Alaska put them within two, 87-85, with still 7.8 seconds left to play.
A split at the line by Matthew Wright with six seconds left gave Alaska a chance to tie the game, but Abel Galliguez missed a three-pointer as time expired.
Wright had 17 points to lead Phoenix while Joseph Eriobu had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Calvin Abueva had 22 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort for the Aces.
