MANILA, Philippines — The Gilas Pilipinas women’s national basketball team won the gold medal in the inaugural 3×3 competition in the Southeast Asian Games after downing Thailand 17-13 at FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan Monday afternoon.
Afril Bernardino was sensational, powering the Filipinas to an early 16-6 lead before the visitors mounted a comeback.
They came to within five points, 16-11, before Bernardino scored to make it 17-11. Thailand last threatened when Warunee Kitraksa drilled a two-pointer to trim the deficit to four.
It was the closest Thailand would get, however, as the Filipinas held on to secure the win and grab gold for the basketball-mad hosts.
The win was made sweeter for the Filipinas as they had suffered a shock 22-20 setback to Thailand Monday morning, with Kitraksa hitting the game-winning double in overtime.
Joining Bernardino in the gold-medal winning team are Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro, and Jack Animam.
