MANILA – The Gilas Pilipinas Women’s team absorbed a heartbreaking 22-20 overtime defeat to Thailand in the preliminary round of the 3×3 basketball competition in the 30th Southeast Asian Games, Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Warunee Kitraksa of Thailand drained the two-pointer in their very first possession of the overtime period to hand the Filipinas their first loss of the event.
The Gilas Women had opened the competition with four straight victories.
Kitraksa’s hot shooting helped keep the Thais in the game, despite the best efforts of Afril Bernardino and Janine Pontejos in giving the Philippines the lead.
A heroic effort by Bernardino allowed the Filipinas to force overtime, as she nailed the two-pointer to knot the count at 19.
After Thailand responded, Bernardino grabbed her own miss and converted the layup at the buzzer to send the game to an extension.
They ran out of steam there, however, as Thailand pounced on the first possession to win the game.
Bernardino finished with 8 points, while Pontejos added 7 markers. Jack Animam had 4 points, and Clare Castro had 1.
