Will we see another delay in the budget? Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:
Distorting the budget
Sen. Ping Lacson warned of another budget impasse if the House of Representatives will insist on realigning P100 billion in public funds in the 2020 budget. The amount, he said, is enough to “distort” the budget. An impasse over the 2019 budget stalled the economy this year.
Reframing a war
It’s been only a few days since Vice President Leni Robredo entered the government’s war on drugs and it seems she is trying to change the very nature of the administration’s war on drugs. She already said last week that drug-related killings must stop. Over the weekend, she said she would reach out to the U.S. and the United Nations, two entities which were heavily criticized by President Rodrigo Duterte himself. Will she be successful in reframing the war on drugs? Robredo is also seeking a higher budget for the war on drugs.
Ready or not
Whether the government is ready or not, the hosting of the Southeast Asian Games will kick off at the end of this month. Problems with the infrastructure have been reported. A send-off for the athletes will be held in Camp Aguinaldo today at 9 a.m.
Various groups are questioning the recent arrests of activists in different locations. Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate will be the guest on ANC’s Early Edition to discuss the arrests. At the Senate, the Committee on National Defense and Security will hold a hearing that could touch on the arrests.
John Gokongwei, Jr. passed away late last night surrounded by the people he so fiercely loved. As ANCX lays out, his life was that of resilience; from overcoming everything from business failures to his daughter’s kidnapping to an especially trying 1998 when a Cebu Pacific plane crashed killing over a hundred.
