The ANC Brief: Presidential address

President Duterte will deliver his State of the Nation Address today halfway into his term. Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:

Legacy
It’s halfway into the term of President Duterte but he is expected to talk about his legacy programs to fight poverty, build infrastructure and curb corruption in his State of the Nation Address (SONA). Are changes in the Constitution also part of his priorities? He is also expected to “educate” his critics on his government’s stand on the West Philippine Sea. Police are on full alert and will impose maximum tolerance on rallyists. But Metro Manila police chief Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said they won’t hesitate to use force against disobedient rallyists. Around 50,000 militants are ready for their yearly SONA mobilization.

Not over till it’s over
It looks like Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano has a lock on the House Speakership. But does he? It’s never over until its over and sneak attack coup can still happen. Meanwhile, Senate President Tito Sotto said he was confident he will be reelected. But again, a change in the leadership is always a possibility.

Ring glory
The fighting lawmaker is not about to hang his gloves just yet. From Sen. Manny Pacquiao’s statements after disposing of Keith Thurman through a unanimous decision, he could go for more ring glory against possibility Amir Khan or even Floyd Mayweather.

Standoff in the high seas
The United States said it was concerned about China’s interference in the South China Sea. China is currently involved in a standoff with Vietnam, which accused China of violating its sovereignty in the disputed waters. The Vietnamese foreign minister has called on China to end violations of its sovereignty and withdraw all ships from its waters.

Private practice
One software developer explains the fine print we don’t read when getting into online trends like FaceApp. “This is a whole different level of debate and concern over what I would call data ethics,” he writes for ANCX.
