UAAP volleyball: NU men bounce back, down UP for solo lead

MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) banked on a balanced attack to take down University of the Philippines (UP) in four sets and rise to the top spot of the UAAP Season 80 men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Four players scored in double-digits for the Bulldogs in their 25-12, 19-25, 25-15, 25-20 victory over the Fighting Maroons.

The win allowed NU to bounce back following a shocking loss to Adamson University in their last match before the UAAP took a break for the Holy Week.

The Bulldogs also improved to 10-2, putting them ahead of idle Far Eastern University and Ateneo de Manila University, who both have 9-2 win-loss slates.

Madz Gampong led NU with 21 points on 15 kills and five aces, while Bryan Bagunas added 19 points. Francis Saura contributed 13 markers, while James Natividad and Kim Malabunga each fired 10. The Bulldogs finished with 14 kill blocks in the game and scored 10 points off their serve.

Outside of a shaky second set, it was smooth sailing for the Bulldogs who are now gunning for a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final 4.

The Fighting Maroons dropped to 3-9, having lost four matches in a row. Wendel Miguel led the UP charge with 23 points on 19 kills and three service aces.

Meanwhile, Adamson fanned its bid for a Final 4 spot by defeating De La Salle University, 25-22, 16-25, 25-15, 29-27.

The Falcons have now won three games in a row and improved to 6-6. They now occupy solo fourth place in the league standings.

It was a costly loss for the Green Spikers, who dropped to 4-8 in the standings.
